Avin and Dave Teaser

Val and I are enjoying a short, “last trip before the baby comes and changes our lives forever” vacation in Atlanta this week. We’ve been walking around the city a bit, seeing the sites, relaxing, etc. But as any of you who are self-employed know, work tends follows you everywhere, and it’s been no different this week for me.

I’ve gotten a little behind schedule with wedding photos this summer, so I brought Avin & Dave’s pictures along to work on when I can. They were married on July 12th, and I know they are anxiously and eagerly awaiting to see pictures, so I thought I’d post some teasers. These are a few of my favorites from the ones I’ve edited through so far. Enjoy!

Chris & Melissa | June 28, 2008

Chris and Melissa had a simply gorgeous wedding. Perfect summer weather - nice blue skies with a few puffy clouds here and there, not to mention the beautiful ceremony and reception. The ceremony was at Luther Memorial Church, which up until then I had driven past hundreds of times but never set foot in. What an amazing space! Simply breathtaking!
Both Chris and Melissa went to the UW, so we made a stop at the Union Terrace and then the Capitol before heading to the reception at The Madison Club.
Chris and Melissa had practiced a special first dance - a classic waltz - but then the party got rockin’! They are members of a sorority and fraternity, so I guess it shouldn’t have surprised me that the dance was a party like I haven’t seen at a wedding in a very long time. The place just went wild when Bucky showed up!
Thanks for the fun day Chris and Melissa!

Amy & Bobby

One of my favorite ways to shoot engagement portraits is to make the shoot almost like a date - minus the dinner, movie and flowers of course. With Amy and Bobby we just hung out near the UW Union. We shot a little bit on the terrace, but it was crazy busy, so we retreated to the trail along the lake. I’ve spent quite a bit of time at the union, but I have never been back along that trail before. It’s so cool back there! We walked on the trail a ways, sat by the lake for a bit, and I even got them to dance a little! Not a bad date!

Susan & Dan | Engagement Portraits

Susan and Dan were the winners of our wedding giveaway contest - their wedding is coming up in late October. No doubt it will be cooler on their wedding day than it was when we shot their engagement portraits at the Monona Terrace. We hung out on the hot and very bright rooftop for a while, but then we retreated into the entryway to take advantage of the AC and some more interesting lighting. It’s amazing how even in the entryway of the terrace there is great light and interesting architecture.

Susan and Dan are such nice and easy going people. Their wedding is going to be a very simple, intimate event with just a few family and friends. We’re really looking forward to it!

Abby and Matt | June 27, 2008

Abby and Matt were so great to work with. They were so easy going and fun - just look at how the guys were dressed! Their ceremony and reception was at the Monona Terrace. They had hoped for a rooftop ceremony, but the chance of rainy weather forced them inside. On the bright side though, the stormy clouds provided an awesome backdrop for some dramatic portraits.

The skies cooperated as well for some post-sunset shots. I love the deep blue skies and all the street lights. And it’s so fun too when we’re out shooting and they get all kind of congratulations from people walking and driving by.

Thanks for all the fun Abby and Matt!

A few teasers …

I know Matt and Abby are eagerly awaiting the photos from their June 27th wedding, so I thought I post a few teasers for them here. Happy Tuesday!

Don’t hassle the Hoff! …long story, but a hilarious speech by Matt’s brother!

Big News!!!

So if you’re friends with Val on Facebook, you’ve been teased for weeks about something big that’s happening. Well it’s taken a few weeks to get all our ducks in a row, but yesterday I made it official, so we can finally announce publicly - we have signed a lease on a studio space!!!

This is something that I have always dreamed of, well maybe not always, but ever since I started this business from the basement of my college apartment six years ago I’ve thought it would be amazing to have a studio space. When Val entered into the picture she started talking about it as well. But even as our business grew and grew it still seemed out of reach in so many ways. Even so, Val was always scouring various resources seeing what spaces were available.

Then she found this ad on Craigslist for a space in Lake Mills in the upstairs of a downtown building. The photos were not impressive. I dismissed it nearly immediately, but she still kept coming back to it until finally she was so curious she convinced me we should at least go take a look.

Not expecting much, we walked up the stairs with the owner. The hallway showed some signs of promise - it wasn’t the rotting disaster I was expecting. Then we walked into the room and cautiously started looking around. It was actually nice. Really nice. Where was the peeling paint and falling down ceiling that I expected? Where were the holes in the walls? Where were the electrical outlets that were so old they must have been installed by Edison himself? That’s what I expected, but Val and I were both pleasantly surprised.

We left Lake Mills and continued on our drive to Chicago. The whole way there we tried to think of every conceivable reason why it wouldn’t work. We tried to think of what was wrong with the place and why it would make no sense for us to take this kind of risk. On our drive home from Chicago late that night, we switched to dreaming of what it could be, and by the time we got home I think we were both convinced that we needed to do it.

I read a quote once that said, “There is no security on this earth. Only opportunity.” That’s what this is for us - opportunity. It certainly didn’t come when we expected it, but I’m a firm believer that when opportunity presents itself, we all need to be ready to go for it in order to be successful. It will be a lot of work for Val and I, and there will be many challenges, but we think we’re up to it.

In the next couple weeks I’ll be getting the space ready for our wonderful clients - I’ll keep you all up to date on our progress. There are other big things on the horizon as well - we’re so excited about our other news that we can’t wait to unveil it! We’ll have more big news before the summer is out, but for now we’re basking in the glory of our new studio!

We occupy the front of the upstairs, so the 2nd story windows are ours and our door, which will be replaced, is on the right.

The entrance to the gallery and studio after you come up the stairs.

This will be our gallery and meeting area.

This is the other room. Our shooting area will be in this part of the room.

In this part of the second room we will have our post production area. (There’s still some junk to be cleaned out!)

Ryan & Jessica | June 21, 2008

Jessica and Ryan were married at Christ Lutheran Church in Stoughton, and held their reception at the Monona Terrace. The ceremony was beautiful of course, and their reception was absolutely gorgeous as well!
Jessica and Ryan, as well as their whole wedding party were great to work with. It’s not easy having your photo taken on the rooftop of the terrace when it’s so hot and bright, but they were real troopers! Jessica and Ryan have the cutest little daughter named Brin. She was pretty wary of me the whole day, but I managed to catch a few shots of her throughout the day, usually giving me a suspicious look.

Enjoy the photos!

Sarah & Andrew | Engagement Portraits

Sarah and Andrew’s shoot was kind of like a “stroll through the park” shoot. We spend a little time on the pedestrian bridge crossing the Fox River in Neenah, but it was a little too sunny there, so we retreated to the shade of the park. We walked around a little, talked about their wedding coming up in November, and oh yeah, we shot some photos too!

They were so easy to work with though it was a lot of fun. I could just tell them, “Go sit down in the grass there together and hang out for bit,” and they while they did that they were so into each other that they completely relaxed, which made for some great photos. I even got them to go down the slide!

Kyle & Megan | June 14, 2008

Megan and Kyle are such a wonderful couple. They were the nicest couple to work with and their devotion to each other and to their faith is inspiring. During our last meeting before their wedding Megan said something that really stuck with me. I can’t remember the exact words, but she said something like, “We want people to see God through our marriage.”

That phrase was in the back of my head throughout their wedding day, and I couldn’t help but think about it as we were shooting at Olbrich Gardens with the storm clouds swirling overhead. My favorites are the ones in of them in the middle of the large grassy area and the dark clouds above. The rain and thunder held off just long enough for us to get some amazing shots - it started raining just as they were stepping back into their limo! Thanks Megan and Kyle for sticking it out despite the threatening weather, and thanks to the rainmaker for waiting just long enough!
